Nano-filtration (NF) is considered a prime method of softening water while avoiding the addition of extra sodium ions. Nanofiltration has a very favorable benefit of being able to process large volumes and continuously produce product streams.
During the NF process, calcium and magnesium ions are retained while passing smaller hydrated monovalent ions; all without the addition of extra sodium ions, as used in ion exchangers.
